Callback is proud to announce our very first Project - The Spot by Grand Rapids' own Perren, out on August 8th.
Our attachment to Perren's (Jonah Yoshonis) music pre-dates the inception of Callback Projects, and in some ways, may be considered an integral part of its origin story. The most disappointing thing about Perren's previous albums (Lazy Eye in 2022 followed by Little Brother in 2023) is that there was never any way to listen to them on a physical format. When Jonah returned from his recording session in upstate New York at the end of last year and shared some of the first mixes with us - we all agreed that we'd need to be able to hold a copy of this record in our hands and put it on the turntable whenever these songs called for further playback. This new entry on the 'stuff we have to make happen' list gave us the push we needed to build a home where it could live harmoniously with all of that other 'stuff we have to make happen.' Callback Projects is that home, and we're suspicisouly optimistic about all of our future roommates.
You can now stream the first single "Too Long" wherever you listen to music. This song is a serendipitious starting point, as Jonah puts it - “This song is about realizing it’s time to take myself a little more seriously; to be more responsible, and to approach making music holistically the way I’ve always intended but never committed to. It’s an expression of the moments that drove me to finally reach out to Mike and Evan about making a record together, so "Too Long" sort of serves as a prologue to the album's existence.”
Pre-orders for vinyl and t-shirts (and a bundle with both to save you a few bucks) are now available on the Callback Projects webstore and Bandcamp page. Holding this record will transport you to The Spot where the album was written and recorded. The album art (by Ben Van Bonn) is a collage of photos that were taken in the detached garage where Jonah made the album alongside his trusted new collaborators Mike Dvorscak (Birdwing) and Evan Marré (Russell the Leaf). The collage was physically screen printed onto a moving blanket as an homage to the make-shift sound treatment that lined the walls where trio ultimately found The Spot (the spot between the speakers where the music sounded the best, which was ceremoniously marked by a piece of masking tape.) The uncoated reverse-board LP jacket has a soft paper-like texture which is as close as we could get to making it feel like the jackets were made out of an actual moving blanket. A 12x12 printed insert with liner notes and lyrics accompany the record pressed on classic black vinyl.
This first pressing of The Spot is limited to 250 copies. If you live near Grand Rapids, you can select the free pick up option to receive your copy live and in person at Speciation Cellars on 8/2 where we'll be hosting a listening party before the album is released on 8/8. Otherwise, your order will arrive at your doorstep in early August.
Thank you for reading, listening, and supporting.
